MI Windows And Doors Recalls certain 1615 and 1617 sliding glass doors, sold as impact-resistant or with a DP50 upgrade for potential glass separation during hurricane conditions.

Recall Summary

Certain MI® Windows and Doors 1615 and 1617 sliding glass doors, sold as impact-resistant or with a DP50 upgrade, manufactured prior to March 7, 2023. 

The doors were sold in several colors and sizes with a variety of handle options. All recalled doors have an aluminum interlock and an LC-PG50 performance grade. The recalled impact doors have MTL-12 on the warranty label; recalled DP50 doors have MTL-12 or MTL-2. The warranty label located at the top of the window also has the manufacturer, series number, performance grade, and manufacture date on the label.

 

HAZARD: The glass can separate from the frame during hurricane conditions which can pose a serious injury hazard.

REMEDY: Contact MI Windows and Doors to schedule a free repair. Prior to repair, cover the doors with plywood or other suitable protection if a hurricane warning is issued for your location. Avoid areas with recalled doors during hurricane conditions.

Description: This recall involves certain MI Windows and Doors 1615 and 1617 sliding glass doors (if sold as impact-resistant or with a DP50 upgrade), Window World 4000 Series sliding glass doors (with DP50 upgrade), and Window World 8000 Series sliding glass doors.

The doors were sold in several colors and sizes with a variety of handle options. All recalled doors have an aluminum interlock and an LC-PG50 performance grade. The recalled impact doors have MTL-12 on the door label; recalled DP50 doors have MTL-12 or MTL-2. The door label located at the top of the window also has the manufacturer, series number, performance grade, and manufacture date (MFG: M/YYYY) on the label.

Sold At: Independent window distributors and installers, including Window World, in the U.S. eastern and southern coastal regions from April 2018 through March 2023 for between $2,000 and $7,000.

Why are you conducting this recall?

MI is conducting this recall to keep consumers safe and to prevent potential injuries.

I bought my door from Window World. Why is MI recalling a Window World door?

MI is one of the manufacturers who make and private label windows and doors for Window World. If your Window World door was manufactured by MI, the label at the head of the door will say “MI Windows.”

 
How are you conducting this recall?

We are sending technicians to consumers’ homes to repair the door panels, at no cost to the consumer. The door does not have to be removed from the house in order to complete the remediation.

What is the problem with my door?

 During hurricane conditions, the glass can separate from the frame which can pose a risk of injury. MI is not aware of any instances of this happening, but has initiated this voluntary recall to remediate the door panels out of an abundance of caution.

My door appears to be okay. Can I continue to use it?

You can continue to use your door during non-hurricane conditions. If a hurricane warning is issued for your geographic area, secure plywood or other sufficient protection over your door and avoid the area.

How do I know if my door is part of the recall?

MI manufactures 4000 Series and 8000 Series doors for Window World. Some of the doors manufactured between April 2018 and March 7, 2023 are part of the recall. Not all 4000 Series or 8000 Series doors were manufactured by MI. The label at the head of the door should say “MI Windows Series 4000” or “MI Windows Series 8000.” If another manufacturer or series number is listed, you do not have the recalled door.

 

All 4000 Series doors sold with a DP50 upgrade and manufactured by MI before March 7, 2023 are part of the recall.

 

8000 Series doors manufactured by MI before March 7, 2023 are part of the recall depending on where they were manufactured. Look at the label at the head of the door. Your 8000 Series door is part of the recall only if manufactured by MI and has the manufacturer code MTL-2. 8000 Series doors with a manufacturer code of MTL-12 are not part of the recall.

What is the easiest way to determine if my door is part of the recall?

We can look up your order if you have the order number. Look for a label at the top of your door that has a 10 or 11-digit number, comprised of 9 numbers, a period, and one or two numbers after the period. It may say ORD before the numbers. If the door does not have an order number, there may be one on other doors or windows in your home manufactured by MI that we can use to find the order.

How do I know if I have a 4000 Series or 8000 Series door?

The 4000 Series and 8000 Series doors are vinyl sliding glass doors. Look at the head of your door for an AAMA label. If the label says “MI Windows Series 4000” or “MI Windows Series 8000” then you have a 4000 Series or 8000 Series door. If it identifies a different manufacturer or series number, your door is not part of the recall.

How do I know if my 4000 Series door is part of the recall?

All 4000 Series doors with a DP50 upgrade manufactured by MI before March 7, 2023 are part of the recall.

How do I know if my 8000 Series door is part of the recall?

8000 Series doors made by MI and manufactured prior to March 7, 2023 are part of the recall only if the manufacturer code on the label says “CODE MTL-12.” If the manufacturer code is “CODE MTL-2,” your 8000 Series door is not part of the recall.

How do I request repair of the panels on my door?

To make the most efficient request for repair, click the “Submit a Claim” button on this webpage and provide the requested information. Alternatively, you can call 1-800-270-2913 and leave a message asking an MI representative to contact you to submit a claim.

What happens if I request the repair?

We will review your claim to confirm you have the recalled door, and once confirmed we will contact you to schedule an appointment to have a technician come to your home to repair the door panels. On some occasions, it may be necessary to replace the door panels. Either way, the door frame does not have to be removed from the house or building.

The repair will be completed at no cost to you. The two things we ask of you are to be home at the time of the appointment and to move furnishings or other obstacles that may impede access to the door prior to the arrival of the technician.
